Fusion 360
Fusion 360 can be installed on an infinite number of computers, but can only be accessed from one at a time. Since it is cloud based, you can log into any other computer that has it installed to have all your files.
How to Install Fusion 360:
- Go to: https://www.autodesk.com/products/fusion-360/students-teachers-educators
- Create an account using your RIT email address, or sign in if you have one
- Verify your eligibility status. Sometimes just hitting the "verify" button is enough, sometimes it needs more info (will require some information such as your birthday and school name)
- Download, install, and run Fusion 360
How to Join the Launch Initiative Project Hub:
- Ask any current admin of the hub to add your email address
- Go to myrit684.autodesk360.com
- If you are not logged in with your Autodesk account, log in
- Check your email for the invite link
- Once you click the link in the email, you can access the Hub with the link above, or by clicking your name in the top left of Fusion 360, and selecting "RIT Launch Initiative."
Ansys
Ansys is a powerful simulation package that can provide engineering design information for complex systems and non-traditional materials. Please note that we have a limited number of seats for the software, so only use it for Launch projects!
- Go to the Ansys Website and click "Customer Portal" in the top right
- Enter the username and password found at this link in the Drive
- Click on the grey box that says "ANSYS 19.2 Now Available," it may be near the bottom of your screen or require you to scroll down slightly
- Determine which of the packages you want to download. Keep in mind that each package takes up a lot of space on your computer. Each one will need to be downloaded one at a time using the following steps:
- Click "Full Package" under the package you want to install
- Once downloaded, open the folder and select "Setup"
- When prompted for server information, enter the server information found at this link in the Drive. Do not change the port information
- Continue the setup process as instructed in the setup program, until you reach "Exit"
- Once installed, packaged can be opened by searching "Ansys 19.2" on your computer's search bar

ThrustCurve
ThrustCurve is a software that allows you to convert data points into a thrust curve that can be inputted into OpenRocket or RockSim to simulate flights with a custom motor.
- Download the .zip Thrust Curve 1.0.zip from the Drive
- Extract the .zip to somewhere on your computer
- Run the installer from inside the extracted folder
- You can now run and open ThrustCurve by searching "Thrust Curve 1.0" on your computer's search bar, or by clicking the application executor
BurnSim
Burnsim is a simulator for characterizing the performance of a solid rocket motor based on its internal geometry, chemical composition, and size. It is useful for simulating the design of solid rocket motors.
- Download the .zip BurnSim 3.1.8 from the Drive
- Extract the .zip somewhere on your computer
- Run the installer from inside the extracted folder
- You can now run and open BurnSim by searching "BurnSim 3" on your computer's search bar, or by clicking the application executor
FinSim
AeroFinSim, or FinSim for short, is a structural analysis software package that simulates fin flutter with Theodorsen and U-g methods, instead of the traditional Pines approximation, which gives more accurate flutter results for high-subsonic and hypersonic flights.
- Download the .zip FinSim from the Drive
- Extract the .zip to Program Files (x86) on your computer
- Make a shortcut of FinSim.exe from inside the extracted folder, and place it on your desktop
- You can now open and run FinSim by searching "FinSim" on your computer's search bar, or by clicking the shortcut.
RASAero
RasAero is like OpenRocket, but uses a different simulation system that works better for flights above Mach 0.7. It is necessary for any rocket that flies over Mach 1.5.
- Download the .zip RASAero_II_Setup_Version_1.0.2.0 from the Drive
- Extract and run the installer
- Once complete, you can access RASAero by searching "RASAero II" on your computer's search bar, or by clicking the application executor
OpenRocket
OpenRocket is a software that allows you to design and simulate rockets
- Ensure you have the latest version of Java at https://www.java.com/en/download/
- Go to http://openrocket.info/ and hit "Download" at the top of the page
- Move the .jar to where you want the program to exist - like the desktop. OpenRocket requires no installation to work.
Slack
Slack is our primary means of communications for the team.
How to join the Slack workspace:
- Go to rit-launch.slack.com
- Create a slack account for our workspace with your RIT email address
- Make sure you use the rit.edu email not g.rit.edu, or else it will not work
- (Optional) install the slack client to access from your comptuer, or use the browser-based version
