Overview
Spirion is an application that RIT uses to scan systems for personally identifiable information (PII). This software is mandatory based on Institute Standards. Please review the end user documentation provided by the Information Security Office (ISO) at http://www.rit.edu/security/content/identity-finder-and-pimi-quick-links. This documentation also includes decision making guides on what to do when PII is found on your computer.
Spirion will automatically run on Fridays, but you are more than welcome to run it manually.
Each month, a report is generated to determine if end user action is required.  To ensure you do not show up on the report, make sure you run Spirion and allow it to complete.  If the scan does not complete, you may show up on a report indicating it has not completed.
Additional information about RIT's Private Information Management Initiative (PIMI) can be found on the ISO Web site at http://www.rit.edu/security/content/pimi-overview.

Quick References
It is recommended that you review the documentation on the ISO's website at http://www.rit.edu/security/content/spirion-identity-finder-and-pimi-quick-links. From there you can find the full instruction manuals on using Spirion to mitigate PII.
Running a scan
Find Spirion in your Start menu to launch it. Then click on Start to begin the scan.
Scan Results
Once the scan has been completed, review each of the findings to determine if you need to shred or ignore the file. Remember that you can only use ignore if the data is not actually PII. If it is PII, you must remove it.
FAQs
Q: The results found include my own personal data. Does it still need to be removed?
A: Yes. You cannot even store your own personal data on an RIT asset. You must remove it.
