IREC 2023 - Reaction Wheel

Project overview

The reaction wheel allows us to control the rocket's roll rate and heading. 

Hard benefits:

• Simulations more closely reflect the rocket's behavior
• Lower-risk recovery due to less spin
• Pointing a scenic camera in a specific (barring that, fixed) direction

Soft benefits:

• First experience with tuning a control system
• First experience with state estimation
• Arbitrarily complicated technical report analysis

Components:

• Wheel & mount

• STM32F411 Discovery kit (replaceable by flight computer connection)
• LIS3MDL magnetometer (replaceable by flight computer connection)

Milestones:

• CDR: L1 scale module designed, desk demo tuning in progress
• FDR: IREC scale module designed, desk demo tuning in progress
